HLAA in Action – Making Our Customer Voice Heard

Advocacy Updates
HLAA Participates in CTIA’s Super Mobility Week
HLAA’s Lise Hamlin traveled to Las Vegas, not to gamble, but to join CTIA, The Wireless Association, at their Super Mobility Week. The event draws 35,000 mobility professionals with more than 1,100 exhibitors. HLAA joined CTIA’s Accessibility Outreach Initiative Forum along with disability advocates and mobile industry representatives. At the Accessibility Forum we were able to network with other disability advocates and members of industry whose job is to focus on accessibility. We spoke about the Internet of Things – how we are going to be more connected to the Internet for health care, fitness, and even to our cars. We also received an update on emergency access via Text-to-911, Wireless Emergency Alerts, and location accuracy data. In the exhibit hall we saw some of the latest mobile devices that are going to make life more accessible for everyone.New Survey of User Needs (SUN) for Wireless Technology Launched — Please Participate!
The Wireless RERC’s research team is pleased to announce the launch of the 2015 Survey of User Needs (SUN) for Wireless Technologies. The SUN is their cornerstone survey of wireless technology use and usability by people with all types of disabilities. The survey mainly focuses on cell phones, but also includes questions about other types of devices like tablet computers such as an Apple iPad, Amazon Kindle Fire, Microsoft Surface, Samsung Galaxy Tab and other similar devices.

First launched in 2002, the SUN is the only national source of comprehensive information and insight into the wireless technology needs of people with disabilities. SUN data are used by the wireless industry, regulatory agencies, advocacy organizations and other researchers to inform their work. Over the years, more than 6,000 people with disabilities have completed the SUN, and more than half have joined their national Consumer Advisory Network (CAN).

Please consider participating in the Survey of User Needs. You can participate on the Web, on the phone, or they can send you a paper copy with a postage-paid return envelope.

On the Web, please go to the following addresses for English and Spanish versions of the questionnaire: English or Spanish

To complete the survey over the phone or to request a paper copy please email John Morrisor call him at 404.367.1348.

Television News Captioning Survey
HLAA posted a survey on television news captioning on August 25, 2015. More than 1,000 people from HLAA, TDI, and NAD completed that survey. Thank you for your input! The survey closed on September 4. The survey will be analyzed and made part of a report to the FCC on the state of news captioning. When that is public, we will be sure to post that to the hearingloss.org.

WEBINAR: A Smartphone Is a Hearing Assistive Technology

photo of presenter
Guest Speaker: Perry C. Hanavan, Au.D.
Date: Wednesday, September 16, 2015
Time: 8 p.m. – 9 p.m. Eastern Time

Join us next Wednesday for a free captioned webinar featuring Perry C. Hanavan, who will be presenting A Smartphone Is a Hearing Assistive TechnologyWebinars are recorded for playback on our website.

He has taught audiology and technology courses the past 40 years. He has provided numerous presentations at HLAA, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and American Academy of Audiology Conventions.

Summary
A hearing aid or cochlear implant by itself is often not enough to hear conversations and alerting sounds. Numerous technologies are designed to help people with hearing loss enhance telephone communication, TV reception, hear alerting/warning sounds, and listen in various kinds of public venues. This presentation will focus on how one device, a smartphone, can serve as a hearing assistive technology.

How to Join the Webinar
Go to the Webinar Schedule page and click on the Join Webinar button.

Java is no longer a requirement to access our webinar platform, Blackboard Collaborate, but there is a series of steps required for first time attendees; we recommend spending a few minutes well in advance of the webinar making sure you are able to access Collaborate. Schoolhouse Rock Live Kicks Off OCTA Season & HLAA-KC’s First OPEN Caption LIVE Theater Event Sept 26, 8pm.

If you have problems reading this, you can open it at http://www.infozine.com/news/stories/op/storiesView/sid/62542/

Posted Thursday, August 20, 2015 :: Victoria Hoffman

Full of energy, humor, music, dancing and some very valuable grammar lessons, Schoolhouse Rock Live kicks off Olathe Civic Theatre Association’s 2015-2016 season with a bang. The show is directed by Shelly Stewart Banks and runs Sept. 11-27.

Kansas City, MO – infoZine – It’s a project packed with memories for anyone who remembers the iconic 70s Saturday morning Schoolhouse Rock cartoon that taught history, grammar, math, science and politics through clever songs. The musical brings all of it to life onstage, chronicling the story of Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher nervous about his first day of teaching. Tom tries to relax by watching TV when various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music, through such beloved Schoolhouse Rock songs as Just A Bill, Lolly, Lolly, Lolly and Conjunction Junction.

For Banks, Schoolhouse Rock is pure nostalgia.

For me, Schoolhouse Rock is a great shared experience of my generation,” Banks said. “It’s how I, and all the kids my age, accidentally learned stuff. I love every bit of it – the cartoons, the songs, the message, the teaching of math, grammar, science and history.”

Banks also has the opportunity to bring both familiar and new perspectives together on the show.

“While the musical director and I grew up on Schoolhouse Rock, a lot of this young cast did not,” Banks explained. “They are approaching it with fresh eyes and ears, bringing their own experiences, music influences, and 2015 sensibilities to the show. I look forward to seeing how we marry the two different generations of perspective to create our own brand of this show.”

The cast includes: Guy Gardner (Tom); Delano Mendoza (Joe); Micayla Miller (Shulie); Kristen Altoro (Dina); and Jennifer Coville (Dori).

The rest of the production staff includes: Kevin Hershberger (music direction) Guy Gardner (choreography); Rita Marks (stage manager); J. Patrick Inlow (lights/video design); Ken Schmidt (set design); and Kerry Schafer (costumes).

In honor of Deaf Awareness Week, OCTA will partner with the Hearing Loss Association of America-Kansas City Chapter (HLAA-KC) to provide an open caption performance at the Sept. 26 show, with seats reserved for a select group of people with hearing loss, their family and friends.

The show runs for three weekends on Sept. 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, and 25, 26, 27 with Friday and Saturday night performances at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.
